Poor Grip Strength

Definition

Poor grip strength is a weak hand muscle strength with poor gripping power and an insufficient energy force applied by the hand to squeeze, pull on, hold onto or hang onto objects. Conversely, strong grip strength is important for tasks such as climbing stairs. Sufficient grip strength is important for holding onto the stair rails with a firm grip clutching the rail or rails to maintain balance and prevent a fall.

Causes

Causes of poor grip strength may include weakness, pain, swelling, or stiffness of the neck, back, shoulder, elbow, wrist, arm or hand. Disorders of nerve, muscle, tendon, ligament tears, trauma or injury, allergic disorder, carpal tunnel syndrome, Alzheimer's disease, Rheumatoid arthritis, genetic or structural disorders are additional causes of poor grip strength.

Symptoms

Symptoms of poor grip strength for carpal tunnel sufferers are difficulty to squeeze or grasp with numbness, itching, tingling, recurrent burning feelings of the index and central fingers and thumb of the palm of the hands. Decreased range of motion and motor loss, fatigue, anemia and unable to relax or release a grip are additional symptoms.
